Skin Cancer Prevention & Treatment Services

At Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center of York, we offer the following skin cancer prevention and treatments:

  • Mohs Micrographic Surgery

    Skin Cancer Treatment

Mohs surgery is a surgical procedure for the removal of skin cancer that is a highly precise and highly effective method. It removes the visible tumor and any "roots" that may have extended beneath the skin surface. Mohs surgery is most commonly used for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Cancers that have recurred are often treated with Mohs surgery because the precision of this procedure is ideal for the elimination of cancers in cosmetically and functionally critical areas such as on the head, neck, hands, and feet. (About 90% of Mohs surgery procedures are performed on the face.) Mohs surgery is the most effective and advanced treatment for skin cancer today. It offers the highest potential for cure even if the skin cancer has been previously treated by another method.

  • Excision and Closure

    Skin Cancer Treatment

The lesion or tumor cancer is cut away with a scalpel and the wound is closed with sutures.
  • Skin Biopsies

    Skin Cancer Prevention

A skin biopsy is a procedure performed in the doctor's office that removes a portion of skin for diagnostic testing. Skin biopsies are frequently performed on dark spots, moles, or other skin lesions to determine if they may be skin cancer. A skin biopsy may also be performed if a skin condition cannot be diagnosed by other means, such as through a skin exam and medical history.
  • Skin Checks

    Skin Cancer Prevention

A skin exam and review of medical history is one of the best preventive measures for preventing skin cancer. During a skin check, the skin is checked for suspicious moles or lesions and changes to the skin that may be precursors of skin cancer.

Skin Conditions

At Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center of York, we treat the following conditions surgically using the appropriate treatment:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a type of skin cancer. It is the most common form of any cancer diagnosed in the U.S. and accounts for 80% of all skin cancers. BCC appears on areas of the body that have had the most sun exposure. This includes the face, ears, scalp, back of the neck, and back of the arms and hands. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is relatively easy to detect. If it is found early, treatment is simple and successful.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a type of skin cancer that appears on sun-damaged skin. It is found most commonly on part of the body where the skin is exposed to the sun, including the scalp, upper rim of the ear, the face, lips, and shoulders.
  • Melanoma

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. It is the most serious type of skin cancer because melanomas have a tendency to spread quickly to other parts of the body (metastasize). Melanoma begins when melanocytes (pigment cells) in the skin become more abnormal and start to divide without control or order. These abnormal cells can invade and destroy the normal cells around them. The abnormal cells form a growth of malignant tissue (a cancerous tumor) on the surface of the skin.
